Potential Causes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Irritable bowel syndrome is not a very pleasant ailment to have. IBS is the most common gastrointestinal complaint in the United States. It affects twice as many women as it does men. IBS does not increase mortality or the risk of inflammatory bowel disease or cancer. One often wonders what are the causes of irritable bowel syndrome?
Diarrhea and constipation are also common symptoms of IBS. Discomfort may persist for a few hours or a few days. Diarrhea is the main symptom of short bowel syndrome. Other symptoms include cramping, bloating, and heartburn .
Eating spicy foods or large meals and foods high in fat can lead to IBS. Dairy products can be a cause of irritable bowel syndrome in some infants and toddlers. If kids witness parents yelling and arguing this can cause stress in your child and the stress can lead to irritable bowel syndrome. Eating good foods for IBS and yogurt as well can go a long way toward preventing symptoms. Eating meals low in fat and high in carbohydrates like rice and pasta may help too, as can drinking eight glasses of water a day.
Doctors diagnose IBS when they see certain symptoms in a patient, but they don’t really know what causes it. There are theories that something is wrong with the muscles that line the colon and move the fecal matter along, or that there is too much fluid in the stool. Doctors usually recommend a diet with enough fiber to produce soft, painless bowel movements. High-fiber diets may cause gas and bloating, but these symptoms often go away within a few weeks as your body adjusts.
