It is not eating less dairy and drinking more water. It is also not exercising. All of these are important and will help find a cure for constipation. This one is far simpler. OK this is an exercise, but it won’t ever make you sweat.
OK enough already! What is this magic obvious cure for constipation? Chew your food.
In today’s world we have been trained to wolf down our food as fast as possible. We have so many things competing for our time, chewing our food has fell by the wayside. Here is what happens when we do chew our food, and what happens when we do not.
First, when we chew.
Digestion begins in the mouth. Saliva contains enzymes needed to begin breaking the food we eat down. The chemical makeup of food is altered by adding saliva. Chewing, by grinding our food into smaller structures alters its physical makeup also. Take grain for instance. Not only does the saliva begin to change the grain into usable starch (sugar) so our body can absorb it, but the physical action of chewing mechanically breaks the fibers in the food. Your teeth effectively grind your food, so the saliva enzymes can completely penetrate the food you are chewing.
When you chew your digestive system is sent a signal by your brain preparing it for food. Your body starts producing everything it needs to properly digest the food you eat. When your digestive system gets a head start, it can more readily digest the food you eat. It is passed through your system more efficiently and effectively. The more nutrients absorbed from the food you eat, the less fat that is absorbed for later use.
The last sentence is worth repeating. The more nutrients that are absorbed from the food you eat, the less fat that is extracted and stored for later use. Women especially, when you eat quickly, your body doesn’t absorb the nutrients it needs, but goes into a panic mode and stores every bit of fat it can get for later use.
What happens when you do not thoroughly chew your food.
When saliva can’t completely saturate your food, it does not break down in your stomach. The way digestion works is the acids in your stomach react with the enzymes in your saliva and break food down to be absorbed. Less chewing means less saliva which means less digestion from stomach acids. This means only the outside layer of food gets digested. This limits the small intestine to only get the nutrients from the outside layer. Since the majority of the nutrients cannot be absorbed, the undigested food is pushed into the colon, where it lays and rots.
This rotting creates the gas, bloating, and when the water is absorbed, makes your stools hard. Hence causing constipation.
Now what about making you a better person?
It’s hard to talk while you have food in your mouth, hence you are listening more. Your relationships will flourish when you realize what other people have to say while you are chewing.
Chewing your food is quite likely the simplest cure for constipation available.
